Podkoren is an elaborate settlement with a clustered core in the Municipality of Kranjska Gora. It is located in the Zgornjesavska dolina, at the top of the Krotnjak stream at the foot of the Jerebikovac hill (1617 m) in western Karavanke, above the left bank of the Sava Dolinka river, which originates a gew kilometers up the valley in Zelenci. From the main road Jesenice – Rateče, the road branches off here over the international border crossing Korensko sedlo to Austria.
Until the construction of the railway in 1870, the upper part of the Upper Sava valley was more connected to Carinthia than to other lands. There was a customs station here. The inhabitants are engaged in animal husbandry (there are still living mountains on the slopes of Karavanka) and tourism. There are ski slopes with lifts on the northern slopes of Vitranac. There is a ski track for World Cup competitions.
At the western edge of the settlement stands the baroque Gothic church of St. Andrei. In the core of the village there are many basically Gothic and late Gothic houses.
In the middle of the Podkoren settlement grows the village linden tree, which is the symbol of the Podkoren Fire Brigade. The village’s linden tree, transplanted from Makovčev’s garden, is also that old, under which old coins have been buried for just as long. The village is protected as a monument.
